It was good that Melaka had advertised about this year’s Dragon Boat Festival early. I booked my hotel room a month in advance. We came an extra 2 days before the dragon boat weekend knowing that Melaka would be jammed packed. Took the excuse to explore the new parts of Melaka.
We happily explore new places on Thursday. Friday, we took the chance to walk around the areas outside of Jonker Street, from Taming Sari Tower all the way to Kampung Morten.
Friday came and I excitedly checked the Melaka River. No sign of a race coming up. Hmmm!
Weird thing was nobody around Jonker Street knew about the festival. No banners. No ads. No nothing.
But it was a huge festival in Melaka all these years, so I thought.
Friday evening came and as we were having dinner, Hubs noticed the Sabah team walking towards the river with their paddles.
Hooray! There is a festival after all.
I was up and about by 6AM on the Saturday morning. By 7AM I was at the river. Walked by the dragon boat teams. Such a relief to me. I saw the Sabah team and made friends.
And as they say… the rest is history!
Now, memories and special moments.
Karapaw Sabah
The only all women’s team here in this race!
