Ximending was founded during the Japanese colonization era and today it is an cultural icon in Taipei from its Japanese roots.
Ximen (西門) stands for West Gate, hence this district is located by the historic western gate of an old Taipei city. Ding 町 is a Japanese character which means district.
It is a walking area and fun. It was crazy to see the amount of people there. Insane to watch people standing on the streets, eating. Food is indeed a big part of the Taiwanese culture and we loved it. Their culinary delights looked so simple but tasted heavenly. I actually loved the part where one can eat a bowl of something and in the next 5 minutes, get to chomp on some unique kebab. A true heaven for a greedy piggies like us!!!
Ximen Red House 西門紅樓
Built in 1908 by the Japanese, it features a Western-styled building. It was initially a public-run market! Today, it is a heritage site with a modern art and cultural market and a cafe. Pretty interesting!

Lu Rou Fan (滷肉飯)
My favoritest of all favorites! A simple braised minced pork over rice. Ohhh but soooo very beary GOOD. I wanted more! I also wanted to try other dishes. Such DIFFICULT decisions at times!

We tried it all in that one little shop. Thank GOD Taiwanese servings are small so we could try more dishes!
