In 1904, the Federated Malay States Railway built a complex of railway maintenance works here in Sentul known as the Central Railway Workshops, the largest in Malaya. It was in these workshops that railways carriages were assembled and serviced. The majority of the parts were also manufactured in the foundry, sawmills and workshops here. In their heyday, these workshops employed 2500 people.
Just before the end of WWII in 1945, these workshops were heavily bombed by British B-29 bombers because they were seen as a vital rail complex for the Japanese. After the war, the workshops were partially rebuilt but never regained their former prominence. Slowly, they became ruins.
This area is where the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) is located. There is also a private gated park next to KLPAC.
