Lui cha is eaten on the 7th day of Chinese New Year to celebrate the birthday of mankind; known as Renri.
To celebrate Renri:
Hakka people eat Lui Cha.
Cantonese people eat raw fish porridge.
Hokkien & Teochew people eat 7 veggie dish.
(I read this from somewhere. Wish someone could verify this bit for me. I only know about the Hakka people)
According to legend, 'Hakka Lui Cha' was created by a healer to boost the strength and immunity of soldiers from one of the kingdoms (Three Kingdoms Period - (220-290 AD) - in ancient China, who had fallen ill due to a mysterious epidemic.
This rice dish is the signature of Ho Po Hakka 河婆 (from Jiexi county in east Guangdong) and Hai Lu Feng Hakka 海陆丰 (from southeast Guangdong). Ho Po Hakka call this dish Lui Cha as it is commonly known. Hai Lu Feng Hakka call this same dish Hum Cha which literally means "savoury tea".
So, we decided to go enjoy our Lui Cha at Wong Mama Hakka Lui Cha in Rawang.
On the way, along Jalan Rawang (before Templer Park) we got stucked. Looooooong jam. Apparently a huge crash happened involving 3 vehicles and a lot of kehpohs probably. Crawled put way past the accident and we were on our smooth way to Rawang.
