"After the failure of the Reform Movement, Emperor Guangxu spent the winter under house arrest. In the summer, he was transferred to this hall. To restrict his activities and as punishment, the Empress Dowager Cixi ordered that all the passageways to the courtyard be blocked with brick walls."
