ChoCha Foodstore

ChoCha Foodstore in old Mah Lian Hotel, Jalan Petaling, KL
Botak Liquor Bar is located upstairs.

Cho Cha means Sit and Tea in the Hakka dialect

Mah Lian, founded in 1969, was known as a hotel but served as a brothel.

ChoCha looks vintage from the outside but has modern decor in the inside, while preserved the original walls and structure. Known as a modern contemporary Malaysian restaurant today.

It looks quiet, lonely and unfriendly during the daytime as this restaurant only opens for dinner at 5PM.

Vintage tiles and iron grilles

I was amazed to find Sabahan and Sarawak food in the menu. I so wished to chat with the owner but nobody was available. Waiters didn't seem to know much nor bothered to supply information.

The waiters were kinda aloof when we walked in at 5PM as we didn't have a reservation. Just led us to a table and informed us that there's a reservation for our table at 7.30PM ~ meaning, we had to leave before 7.30PM. Oh well...

The menu, as you can see, is quite limited. Very posh. Servings are small.

ChoCha Fried Chicken ~ brined 1/4 free range chicken, sambal tuhau, pickled papaya RM38
Nasi Ulam Udang Salai ~ beras salleh, pickled tuhau + budu, grilled confit blossom, smoked prawn, mixed herbs + greens  RM40
Kale + Asparagus ~ mixed ulam, kale chips, curry raita  RM32
Grilled Fish ~ ikan senangin, petai miso, compressed cabbage  RM82
Smoked Eggplant ~ hummus, cultured chilli sauce  RM26
