Pearl Farm, Halong Bay

Halong Bay Hanoi
This pearl farm is also known as Tung Sau Pearl Farm and it is situated in Halong Bay. One may only reach it by boat. The story of pearl farms in Hanoi went back to 1995. Founded by Japanese organizations and then handed over to the Vietnamese when enough people were trained to make this industry successful.

A technician showed us how they cultured pearls in the farm. Each live oyster can only live until 4 hours so everything has to be done and oysters to be back into the waters way before 4 hours. Each live oyster has to be manually opened and inserted with a tiny piece of tissue (red) and a small shell bead (white bead). This bead is the nucleus around which the oyster secretes layers and layers of nacre (mother of pearl), a substance that forms the pearl.

The pegged oysters were the ones that have been pried opened for insertion of tissues and beads
This is a 2 year old oyster. It was brought out to show tourists its pearl which was embedded in the insides.

The pearl farm has its own little 'mall' as well with a good variety of pearl products.
