The Roasterie: Air-Roasted Coffee

Hi everyone, Welcome to The Roasterie, Kansas City, U.S.A.

This Roasterie is well-known for its air-roasted coffee.

What is air-roasted coffee?
Coffee beans are suspended by roasting them on a fluid bed of 680 degree hot air. The fluid bed is a vortex inside of the roasting chamber. The vortex allows each coffee bean to be roasted evenly. The coffee beans will pop and crack during air-roasting. A skin, known as 'the chaff', from the beans will then be blown away into a different chamber. This is an important process because if the chaff stays on, it would burn and smoke; giving the coffee a bitter and smoky flavor. Once the desired roasting level is reached, the heat would be cut off and the cooling process starts.

The Roasterie is famous in Kansas City. It started in 1993 and today, it has cafes all over the city. It even has a cafe in the University of Kansas! We were privileged to tour the coffee factory and had free tasting of coffee.
