Shanghai Old Street -Chinese New Year 2021

Shanghai Old Street 上海老街 (Shànghǎi lǎo jiē)

We decided to visit Shanghai Old Street as Chinese New Year is around the corner; just to see how it is like here. Some shops were selling lanterns and decorations for the new year. We visited a jewelry shop and the owner sadly shared with us that a major portion of the historical shophouses here will be demolished soon. WHAT? WHY?

Shanghai Old Street is located next to the famous Yuyuan Bazaar and City God Temple. Perfect for tourists to visit this stretch of history. This area was originally an important venue for Shanghai's foreign trade and small commodity trading. Officially known as Fanbang Middle Road, it is a 825 meter long road. Its architecture style shows old Shanghai from the Ming and Qing dynasties.

It is such a shame that the government has decided to forego this historical street as I think Shanghai is unique because of its ancient history of life and culture. Shanghai Old Street is the essence of old Shanghai.
