KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall

KLSCAH
Dewan Perhimpunan Cina Selangor
Founded in 1923
Building completed in 1934
Located directed across the road/bridge from Petaling Street

Impressive white building. There’s a grand Chinese restaurant at the left corner. Minute we reached the main entrance, to my surprise, there were many young newly wed couples taking their wedding photos there!
Because of a grand looking curving staircase? Why? It’s dark and dingy. Not exactly a happy photography moment especially for weddings. Trying to experience a nostalgic moment,  I assumed.

KLSCAH opened its doors to the public last Saturday, in conjunction with Kampung Attap's Peszta.
Most interesting to me was that the exhibition halls which featured the history of past founders like Loke Yew and Yap Ah Loy, and of the growth of Kuala Lumpur was explained in the Chinese language and Malay language only. No English! Very detailed explanation too, with plenty of old photos.

Here’s what we learnt:

❇️ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐊𝐋𝐒𝐂𝐀𝐇
A captivating history corridor that takes visitors on a journey through time, spanning pivotal years during the eras of Loke Yew and Yap Ah Loy, to the building’s attainment of its National Heritage status.

❇️ 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐲: 𝐋𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐘𝐞𝐰
Showcases Loke Yew’s contributions to building of the modern state of Kuala Lumpur. Loke Yew (1846–1917), originally from Heshan, Guangdong, China, was a renowned Chinese businessman in Malaya from the mid-1880s to the 1910s.

❇️ 𝐅𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦, 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧!
An exhibition on human rights that encourages viewers to visualize and engage with the concept of freedom, revisiting stories that led us to where we are today, and to reflect on what freedom means in our present age.
