Sitiawan

After breakfast, we were off to Sitiawan, Perak. However, we first stopped at Ayer Tawar @ Fresh Water, a little town with only about 30,000 people living there. I read that in this quiet town there is a historical restaurant that serves gobsmacking sweet and sour pork ribs! I just gotta find out how gobsmacking it is!!!

Found the restaurant named Sun Hon Siong situated right at the Lumut Highway, at the corner. We were the first customers to arrive and guess how long we had to wait for our food? ONE HOUR! I am not sure whether this goes on every daily or weekend, but they sure are most disorganized in the kitchen. I found that people who came for takeaways get their food first. Oh yeah, it is okay to keep customers who are dining-in waiting, right?
I was wondering what the lady was doing...
When we ordered fresh barley, we were served in a Guinness bottle!
Bumped into my ex-teacher. It was one of those rare moments because she presently lives in Australia. What are the chances of meeting, right? Wonderful to catch up with her and her family members.
Noticed the cobwebs at the bottom of the table?
 Bittergourd
The gobsmacking sweet and sour pork ribs. They were DELICIOUS!
 Spicy tofu

The beautiful Tua Pek Kong Temple. This temple deserves its very own place in this blog. Look out for it in the next entry.
The sun was way too strong. I could not open my eyes properly!
Bumped into my college mates here in the temple. Haven't met each other for the past 22 years!
Pioneer Methodist Church, built in 1905 but was burnt down the following year. This current church was rebuilt in 1927.
Cheong Cia Gong Pian, 23 years of baking gong pian history in Sitiawan

 Hmmmmm.....the sweat!!!

Biscuits are baked down a fired up well.
I passed by this surgery clinic and thought it as most haunted-looking!
Restaurant Yee Si, another historical coffee shop, supposedly offers fantastic peanut buns. When we arrived (we went half hour earlier to wait), we were told someone had booked ALL the buns for today. I thought it was unfair for people who actually came all the way to try their famous buns. We were not the only ones. They should at least keep some for dine-in patrons.

Tried the famous Mee Suah in Restaurant Yee Si. Most disappointed. Pretty cool in looks but tasteless to me. Nothing close to the ones in Kuching, Sarawak!
Tried the pork buns and the tausa buns here too. Not very impressed.

 The Maha Mariamman Temple
The famous James Cendol is located in front of the Maha Mariamman Temple. When we arrived, cendol had finished and we all had to wait for the new batch to arrive. Didn't have to wait very long. The crowd was patient even though it was a crazy hot day.

Again, I wasn't that impressed. I prefer the Penang Road (original) ones, more flavorful.
