Let's go visit the home of our first Prime Minister, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj. He named his house Ruman Merdeka or House of Independence. Tunku's house is rather unique. You see, during the Japanese invasion in 1942, the family had a wooden house. Then in 1953, he built another structure nearby (this current house) and placed the old wooden house on top of the new structure. This is the house which visitors get to visit today (below).
Behind this house is a river named Sungai Anak Bukit, a tributary of River of Kedah. In the olden days this house used to have its pier where Tunku would cruise the river with his boat.
This house and the grounds are beautifully maintained. There is no entrance fee to visit the house. However, photographing inside the house is forbidden.
