Shanghai - Jing'an Temple

First Day of Chinese New Year

Jing'an Metro Station
I read that the Chinese worshippers usually gather at Jing'an temple on the first day of Chinese New Year for prayers and blessings. Located at West Nanjing Road, it is uniquely surrounded by high rise buildings (shopping malls).

Just look at the crowd. We arrived just before Noon and the gates were closed by then. It was probably not a good idea to enter the temple as it would be difficult to enjoy the architecture but it was just amazing seeing the crowd.

Those who could not enter the temple prayed outside the huge wooden doors.

Third Day of Chinese New Year

We went back on the 3rd day of Chinese New Year. Atmosphere was calmer then. It was 100Yuan per person to enter, WOW!

Jing'an Temple was built in the Three Kingdoms Period (220 - 280). It was originally named as Hudu Chongyuan Temple and was renamed Jing'an in 1945 by a famous calligrapher. Unfortunately, the temple was burnt down to ruins in 1972. Reconstruction began and Jing'an was opened to the public in 1990.

There are 3 main halls in Jing'an Temple:
The Mahavira Hall
The Hall of Heavenly Kings
The ThreeSaga Hall

It was fun watching people, especially kids, tossing coins into this tall central tower for good luck.

The room where 3 huge gods sit. Closed!

Drum Tower. Closed!

The Mahavira Hall is supported by 46 columns and constructed entirely from Myanmar Teak.
