Kuala Kurau

Welcome to Kuala Kurau!
Where is this place? You are in the state of Perak, to the left of the map, very close to the Straits of Malacca. If you  look closely, Kuala Kurau village is located along the River Kurau @Sungai Kurau which flows out to the Straits of Malacca.

This Chinese temple named Dato Lim Tian Lai Temple, 1948, faces the entrance to the village. I parked my car at the temple's parking lot and decided to explore this village on foot.

Walking into the village
Such a cute little tuck shop next to an old house

Salted fishhhhhhh everywhere.....OOOOOOOH!!!

Bathing in salt

A cute little gas station in the village

I am most fascinated with the houses here. When I entered this village, I first noticed that houses were on the left side of the road and shop houses or eating stalls are on the right side of the road. And oh yeah... there is only one main road here! There are no fence or gates for the houses. Each house has its own unique design.

I saw this banner in Google but it was all in Chinese. Had to find out what he was cooking!
Locals call these babies 西亚煎

They are prawn fritters that's made out of jicama @sengkuang, chives, garlic and prawns. Very tasty and crispy.

Kinda look like frisbees!

Look at the generous amount of jicama in the fritter!
Another unique specialty here is Balitong!
The name itself threw me off the track. What in the world is Balitong?
Conical snails
Oh, in the photo above, there's nothing in the sweet potato pot, those packet-like things are the reflection from the roof!!!
The boss showed us how he cooked the snails in pure sweet potato gravy.

Very tasty BUT it takes great effort to suck the flesh out of all these snails. Phew!

This Assam Laksa was one kicked-ass dish!

Fresh Pineapple drink

Very curious about all these narrow pathways that run from the main road

Could not stand it anymore. Had to explore one pathway!

Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat's where the river is hiding!!! I was searching for the river all this while!
This is the Kurau River @Sungai Kurau. It separates Kuala Kurau and Bagan Seberang.
This is the Kuala Kurau fishing village.

An interesting village indeed!
