A Bastion Fort in Georgetown, Penang
A bastion fort is a defensive wall (fortification) in a style that evolved during the early modern period of gunpowder when the cannon came to dominate the battlefield.
Named after the 18th century Governor - General of Bengal, India ~ Charles Cornwallis.
This is Malaysia's largest standing fort ~ 3,32,859 square feet
Francis Light landed in Penang in 1786 and named Penang "Prince of Wales Island."
The fort was built in 1786 and completed in 1810; to protect the island from pirates and Kedah warriors.
When we were there, the street of cannons and tunnel were closed. Part of the fort was under construction.
