Beijing - Tian'anmen Square

We are here... at the well-known Tian'anmen Square!

Tiān'ānmén  天安门

Gate of Heavenly Peace

I was quite confused at first, trying to figure out where the square starts and ends.  Finally figured it out!  It actually starts from the entrance of the Forbidden City where the portrait of Mao Zedong hangs, all the way to the back area of Mao Zedong's Memorial Hall where the Zhengyangmen Gate Tower stands. The confusing part is the area where the National flag is flown on the square and the entrance of the Forbidden City is separated by a huge road named Chang'An Avenue. One can easily cross the avenue by using the underground tunnel without worrying about the traffic.

This is the area or garden before the entrance to the Forbidden City. Look across the avenue and there's is the bigger part of Tian'anmen Square.

Walking up the stairs from the tunnel... tadaaaa.... Tian'anmen Square!

World's largest public square

A symbolic place where the establishment of the People's Republic of China was proclaimed to the world by Mao Zedong in 1949.

The square includes the People's Heroes Monument, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China and Mao Zedong's Mausoleum.

This is his final resting place where his body was embalmed and placed in a coffin for people to visit and pay their respects.
