Kota Bharu 2

 Padang Merdeka @ Merdeka Square

This place is also known as Independence Field as the independence of Malaya was declared right here! This spot was originally a floating market in the 19th century. When the land was reclaimed in 1844, it was called Padang Kelupang.

The Kota Bharu Cenotaph was built by the British following World War I.

Istana Jahar @ Jahar Palace

Kelantan Traditional Royal Ceremonies Museum

Built in 1887, this was a former palace during the reign of Sultan Muhammad II. It was named after a Jahar tree which was growing in the grounds at that time. I could not find how a Jahar tree looks like but base on some reading, it had yellow flowers as big as "bunga melor".
This palace was converted into a museum in 1981.
No photography was allowed inside the palace.

Istana Balai Besar @ Grand Palace

Built in 1844 of cengal timber. This palace is used for important occasions today. It is not opened for the public as it contains the throne and royal regalia.

 Bank Pitis @ Treasury Bank

Kelantan used to have its own currency named pitis. Constructed between 1889 to 1890, this treasury building was used by Sultan Muhammad III to store the state's treasures and currency. Today it is a cute little historical building.

 A lady selling grilled squid!
A lot of people were selling fruits from their car booths!
Stall by the road that sold all sorts; sausages, banana fritters, nuggets!
Chinatown during the daytime

 Beautiful batik as decor
 Bazaar Siti Aisyah
A very famous Nasi Ulam shop. It was sardine-packed during lunchtime!
 Istana Batu @ Batu Palace

This Royal Museum was built in 1939 and was an official residence until 1960. It was then converted to a museum in 1991. It displayed personal possessions and elegant decor was maintained. No photography was allowed in the palace.

 Kampung Kraftangan @ Handicraft Village

This is handicraft market located right opposite Istana Batu @ Batu Palace. It is a hub for Kelantan's arts, crafts and food.

We loved Kota Bharu. There was just so much to learn and see and photographed. Of course, with nice friends there, it made our visit an extra special one!
