Ulu Yam: Our History

Our first visit to Ulu Yam was because I was curious about The World of Phalaenopsis in September 2017. I wanted to surprised Hubs as he is crazy about orchids. So I read up a bit and Ulu Yam did not appear to be a town with much to offer. Still, I was curious. We went. We fell in love with the orchid farm and have been there many times since then.

Batu Dam @ Empangan Batu
One of the major dams in Klang Valley. A pretty neat place.

We also found some quiet fishing spots around Ulu Yam and this was one of them.
I read that Ulu Yam is famous for Coconut Prawns. So we visited this restaurant on our first visit to this town. The food did not look good but tasted okay.

Not very satisfied, we hunted for another restaurant. You see, it is easy to read from reviews but taste is so subjective, you just gotta try it for yourself.

We found the LOVE OF OUR LIFE - Hock Lay Restaurant!!!

This was our very first Coconut Prawns here in this restaurant and O M G, prawns were fresh and they were overflowing and the soup was so awesome!

We came back for more, more, MOREEEEEE!!!

We usually clean out the coconut!!!

Other than their SUPER YUMMY Coconut Prawns, they have really tasty food. Their chefs are just superb. There are dishes that we tried here alongside the coconut prawns.

Sweet potato leaves
Sambal petai
Salted egg bittergourd
Marmite chicken wings
Stir fried mushrooms
THEIR CRABS ARE EXCELLENT TOO!!!

Some other food that we tried around Ulu Yam which were really delicious were as followed:

Loh Mee
Herbal noodles
Yam noodles

Ulu Yam is our haven for food, specifically Coconut Prawns and Crabs. I have tried coconut prawns in a couple other towns but NOTHING compares to Hock Lay restaurant's. So whenever we crave for their food, we just hop on the car and drive, without a thought, without hesitation! It is an hour's drive for us from Petaling Jaya to Ulu Yam. No biggie, it is like driving to the airport!!!
