Qing Dynasty Post Office at Zhujiajiao Water Town
The Great Qing Post Office, it is called! Shanghai used to have 13 major post offices at that time and this was one of them. It was founded during Qing Emperor Tongzhi's reign, in 1903. It is now the only historical post office site in East China.
Luck was not on our side as it was closed when we found it. I was so eager to see its ancient postal exhibits. However, I was excited enough to be able to photograph a real bronze-cast dragon postal box from the Qing Dynasty era, located just outside the main entrance.
The weird feeling when we were hunting for this post office was we had to pass a narrow alley of modern coffee cafes! So it was like "Are we in the right direction?" the whole way. I mean, we were passing lattes, cappuccinos, pastas, and fries in that alley. I called that alley Coffee Street!
Suddenly, there it was! Standing alone with its ancient bricks, like a tired old man, who had just finished a life long journey.
