Shanghai - Zhujiajiao Water Town

It was a crazy metro ride from Pudong to Zhujiajiao, yet we were determined to do it! For 7 Yuan, it was Line 13 Zongke Station to Xintiande Station, changed to Line 10 to Hongqiao Railway Station, then changed to Line 17 to Zhujiajiao Station. TWO whole hours of a one way ride!

Welcome to Qingpu District of Shanghai!
Thank God for perfect weather!
Got off the metro station and was relieved to see this beautiful view!

It's about 1 Km walk to Zhujiajiao Water Town. Let's go!
Stopped by this place called Bai Nian Long Pao ( 100 Years Old Dragon Gown) for a quick breakfast.
The street towards the water town is pretty neat with shops left and right, and a huge walking pavement. I'd say this again and again, I love the spaciousness of walkways here in China.
The Venice of Shanghai

The settlement of Zhujiajiao 朱家角 really dates back to the Yuan Dynasty where it prospered through trade in rice and cloth. It was then granted township status by Emperor Wanli (1572 - 1620) of the Ming Dynasty. Today, it is one of the top 4 cultural ancient towns in Shanghai.  This water town is close to 4000 years old!

I am most excited to see lots of Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911) architecture. Ancient buildings are so intriguing; guess because they are irreplaceable and so many stories to tell the young, like myself!

Lots of small shops selling yummy bites too!
Crossing a bridge and saw this view

Cross the road and we are there!

Welcome to Zhujiajiao Water Town

McDonald's is setting camp here!

Zhujiajiao Water Town is really a food haven!

Steamed cakes
Green soya beans made into chips

Biscuits of all sorts

Meat slices

Decorated tortoises! Looked like wrapping paper was pasted on their shells, right?

Sugarcane and Coconut drink

Fangsheng Bridge

Built in 1571, it links the North and South of Zhujiajiao town, across the Cao Gang River.

There are 36 bridges here. Yupp, THIRTY SIX ancient stone bridges. No I will not be visiting all 36; that would take me 2 days! Fangsheng Bridge is supposedly the tallest and the longest bridge in this town so that's all good for me.

Yuanjin Temple, 1341, is a Buddhist monastery which was built during the Yuan Dynasty.

A lovely private residence. Could not help but photograph it as its garden is simply beautiful. Moreover there was a guard cat too!

City of God Temple or Cheng Huang Miao is a Taoist temple. Its main duty is to protect the wellness and happiness of the local folks.

I call this the Coffee Street! It is actually named Xihu Street.

We ended our evening with coffee at one of the adorable coffee cafes here in Xihu Street.

Amused when they served KFC's ketchup with the fries that we ordered!
