Fantoft Stave Church
Built in Fotun in Sogn in 1170
Moved to Fantoft in 1883
Burnt down in 1992
Rebuilt in 1997
It was raining. Hard. We had to see this church although it was closed for the winter. It was opened right after Christmas for weddings and christianings but would only open again for public visitation in the sunmer.
A blackened stave church. How unique! The stylised dragon heads were main features of the exterior. It was said to be the result of Norse mythology and the emergence of Christianity when the time the church was originally built.
Cross for burial
