Krokelvdalen is a neighborhood in Tromso, across the bridge from the mainland. We came here to visit a Reindeer Camp run by the Sami people.
The tour was from 1PM to 5PM with the Artic Reindeer.
We were welcomed by the Sami people, encouraged by them to get into the teepees to warm ourselves whenever we needed to, ensured us that there’s coffee, tea, hot chocolate and cookies provided too. Lunch was included as well.
Guess what’s for lunch???
Welcomed by a Sami lady
The Sami is the indigenous people in Scandinavia, mainly Norway, Finland, Sweden and Russia. They have their own languages, culture and traditions.
Their language is very difficult to learn. For example: There are 300 words for the word SNOW. Their languages goes into minute details so my guess there is a word for every detail you can think of. The North Samis and the South Samis do not speak the same language.
Reindeer herding was their main business in history and carried on by some groups until today.
There are about 300 reindeers in this camp.
We got to feed the reindeers, take a sledride with them and had them for lunch!!!
They love their food. If you carry a bucket of their food, they will follow you everywhere. Some may get naughty and poke you with their antlers. However, they are gentle animals, just forever hungry.
They don’t like to be touched, they would just walk away. So taking a photo or video with them is pretty tough unless you are fast with your camera or you have a bucket of food with you.

Reindeer sledding
I opted for one round as I knew it would be cold. BUT, their one round is as big as a running track and with -13C, I felt my face frozen after the ride!!! Could not even pronounce words properly.
That’s our reindeer
