Chuong Village ~ Hometown of Conical Hats
Phuong Trung Commune
We had to walk into the village, through a market, to reach our house for lunch and conical hats.
Conical hat is a symbol of Vietnamese women. Until today, these hats or locally known as Non La are worn daily, rain or shine. Light on the head. Does its job better than a cap!
The house of conical hats!
Vu our tour guide and the lady was our cook (lunch) and teacher for conical hats.
Lunch
Lunch was plentiful and tasty. Homecooked Vietnamese meal. There were …
Rice
Spring rolls
Pork with quail eggs
Fried chicken fillets
Fried shrimp in batter
Veggie soup with pork ribs
Tofu
Boiled choy sum
Bananas and Oranges
Coca cola
Beer
Conical hats are made from bamboo
Main material to cover the hats were dried palm leaves. A good quality hat takes a good whole day to get done.
I had no patience in learning to make a conical hat so I goofed around painting one. Even painting this hat was difficult. Paint “disappears”!!! You gotta use thick paint with least water in order for paint to stay on the hat.
I could hear very clearly how a hat is made as the other group was right next to me.
