Was walking and came across this exhibition. I thought it was Chinese Opera and was excited. Went inside and saw the characters....hmmm, something is not right!
The art of Tuong ~ Vietnamese Opera!
This exhibition was held to commemorate Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day which was on November 23; 18th anniversary this year. It was to introduce or reintroduce Tuong, a folk art which turned into a royal art in the 17th century.
Classic Vietnamese Opera which began in the Ly - Tran Dynasties (1009 - 1400 AD) in the 12th century.
Known as Hát Bội in the South and Hát Tuồng in the North,
The introduction of Tuong to Vietnam started with tales from the Vietnam - Mongol conflict.
There's 5 different styles of Tuong:
1) Ancient Classical Opera or the Classical Opera of the Court - written by scholars for the Kings.
2) Classical comic opera with plays.
3) Classical opera with plays written at the end of the 19th century, motivated by resistance to the French.
4) Modern classical opera - focus of a novel in a romantic spirit (1930-1945)
5) Contemporary classical opera born after 1945
