Coffee Factory: Joo Fah Trading

This was our 2nd time visiting this coffee factory in Tanjung Sepat. The first time, we came with friends to buy some coffee powder but factory workers were having their day off. This time, we were lucky to be able to chat with the boss and watch the procedures from roasting of coffee to coffee powder grinding.

Joo Fah started their coffee production in the 1960s. They still use the traditional roasting method today because the boss  believed that the aroma of the coffee is different. Better!

I have a lot of respect for the coffee workers after I stood there for a good hour, sweating like a hog! Stubbornly, I wanted to watch the whole process and the boss was kind enough not to chase me out. In  fact, he was so patient in answering all of our questions and explained some more along the way. I loved his sincerity because some people would not want to explain in detail for fear of losing their business, maybe. Not an easy business to replicate unless you are willing to work in such heat and dedication. Plus, these people have years of experience. They could roast the coffee beans blinded folded. They know exactly when to add the sugar and how not to burn them.  They could read the coffee beans perfectly.

Coffee beans have to be roasting for 5 good hours

Sugar is stirred in at the last stage of the roasting process. This gives the coffee a richer aroma and taste.

Caramelized coffee beans were scooped out and cooled by fans.

Caramelized coffee beans. Kinda look like tar!

Separator is then used to break the beans into smaller pieces to go into the grinding machine.
