Pantheon

The Pantheon, a former Roman temple, now a Catholic church in Rome.

The word Pantheon is derived from ancient Greek, pan means all and theos means gods.

The Roman Pantheon is the most preserved and influential building of ancient Rome. It was a Roman temple dedicated to worship  all gods. It was built between AD 118 and 125.

There are no windows in the Pantheon. It, however, has a large oculus where the sun shines through; the only source of light in the centre of the dome. It is known as the Eye of the Pantheon.

The 16 massive granite Corinthian columns at the entrance were quarried in Egypt, dragged to the Nile and shipped to Rome.

The marble floor is still the ancient Roman original, where it features a series of geometric patterns.
