Palace of Versailles

One of the greatest achievements in French 17th Century art.

King Louis XIII built Versailles as a hunting lodge and a private retreat  for himself and his family. His son, King Louis XIV, ruled France for 72 years and transformed Versailles into a palace and moving the Court and French Government there. Louis XIV is known as the Sun King, an absolute monarch, distant and untouchable. Every detail of the architecture and decor was to glorify the king.

Hall of Mirrors

This is a hall in which 17 mirrored arches span out, reflecting 17 windows with arcades facing the garden. Every arch has 21 mirrors. Walls are of marble embellishments with bronze-gilt trophies and statues in antique style.

The Hall of Mirrors was where Germany signed the Treaty of Versailles, ending World War I in 1919.
